Thomas Tuchel reveals what Chelsea need to overcome to compete with Man City and Liverpool
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, as quoted by football.london, Thomas Tuchel lauded the quality of Manchester City and Liverpool before assessing what Chelsea need to do in the three-way title race.
The Blues are in one of the fiercest titles chases in Premier League history. There has always been competition for the league title but three teams have never looked so in-sync about their ambitions and the strength of depth in their squads.
It has gotten to a point where all three clubs have been at the top of the table at least once in the last four months. Chelsea had the lead for the longest time, before losing to West Ham 10 days ago and squandering it to Pep Guardiola’s Man City and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
It looked like we were going to fall out of the race after drawing against Leeds United on the weekend. But a late penalty ensured we remain within 2 points of the top of the table. Thomas Tuchel recently addressed our title chances and lauded the quality of our rivals.
“There was never a doubt they (Man City) have the quality because for years they have shown this consistency with Liverpool…So, we cannot be surprised now, and we can’t give up. We knew this before and enjoy being in the middle of difficult moments.
“Maybe it is what we need at the moment to overcome. We were lucky at the weekend but did not feel blessed with luck against West Ham. We did not have the luck against Burnley. So, we should not start to say sorry for a late victory (against Leeds). We found a way to win the game.”
Tuchel also went on to admit that his side had luck on their side against Leeds. While that is true, every point matters and come to the end of the season, it could make all the difference in the world.
Best title race ever?
There have been some unimaginable titles races in the last two decades. The Citizens have played a part in most of them, with Sergio Aguero’s 94th-minute winner against QPR in the 2011/12 season, long living in the memories of every Manchester fan, if not every supporter of the beautiful game.
The 2013/14 season also saw Liverpool squander their title to the Etihad outfit in the final weeks. The 2018/19 title race saw Man City win the trophy by a point. Chelsea have, more often than not, won the title comfortably.
Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte battered the competition, courtesy of which the Blues have rarely had nervy title chases. However, things are different this time around, and Tuchel needs to find the trick to defeat two of the greatest sides in recent English football history.

It is a hugely entertaining race but the supporters of the losing team are going to feel bitter by the end of it. Each team is hoping for a mistake from the other and the West London club need to maintain top form.
If history has taught us anything, it is that neither Klopp nor Guardiola’s side concede an inch. The onus is on us to keep our end of the bargain and take advantage of any slip-up.
