Chelsea eyeing a move for 21-year-old Barcelona defender

Transfer News: Chelsea plot move for Barcelona star Sergino Dest

According to the latest transfer news on El Nacional (h/t football.london), Chelsea are looking to orchestrate a deal for Barcelona full-back Sergino Dest.

The recently turned 21-year-old joined the Blaugrana outfit last summer after spending eight glorious years at AFC Ajax. The youngster went through the ranks at the Dutch club and featured for the senior side in the 2019/20 season, after which Barcelona snapped him up.

He was immediately fielded into the first-team at the Nou Camp as he made 44 appearances across all competitions last season but failed to win any silverware – a rare occurrence at the La Liga club, given their success in the last decade.

The USMNT international has also maintained his place in the starting line-up this season, having made 13 appearances under Ronald Koeman before the former Everton boss was sacked.

Dest may also be on his way out now as Chelsea are looking to pull off a deal for him. The West London club operates with wing-backs, which would suit the American’s style as it would complement his output in the attacking as well as defensive phase.

Although the Blues have academy graduate Reece James performing exceedingly well on the right side, the Englishman was occasionally tried out in the centre-back role last season.

Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, and Antonio Rudiger will be out of contract at the end of this season and it remains to be seen how many of them the Blues can afford to keep a hold of. If more than two of the quartet leave, James might be pushed back in the centre-back option by Tuchel next season.

Thus, there is a need for a full-back and signing Dest could be a clever move by the Blues. However, it remains to be seen whether the Barcelona ace would be interested in joining the reigning European champions.
