Transfer News: Fabrizio Romano claims PSG could look at Chelsea ace N’Golo Kante amidst contract worry
Speaking to TalkChelsea (h/t The Mirror), transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that PSG could be ‘looking at’ N’Golo Kante among other midfielders, with Chelsea yet to begin talks over a new contract.
The French midfielder has been one of the best midfielders in England since he signed for Leicester in 2015. After helping the Foxes win the league title in his first season, the Blues brought him to Stamford Bridge.
The midfielder has since been instrumental in Chelsea winning the Premier League, Europa League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FA Cup. His contract is set to expire in 2023 but Chelsea have apparently not opened talks over a new deal.
Fabrizio Romano revealed the club’s stance on renewing the player’s contract and talked about potential interest from PSG over a move next summer.
“Kante and Chelsea are not talking about a new contract as of now, but it is one of the things that Chelsea have on their agenda. I think that is the plan with Kante long term.
“But you know with these kinds of players, with top clubs looking for midfielders, as I said before with the strikers, this year will be a big, big summer for midfielders. PSG and many other clubs will be looking for them – so let us see what happens.”
PSG have been on the perennial search for the Champions League title for over a decade now. Thus, it would not really come as a surprise if they want one of the best midfielders in the world to join them. Not to mention, Kante began his footballing career in France as well.
Not the worst scenario
The French international is arguably one of the best players in the team every time he puts on our famous blue jersey. But those moments are decreasing as time passes. Injuries are catching up to him, and Tuchel has found a way to win games without him.
Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic are more than competent central midfielders, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek is also adjusting seamlessly in that role. Billy Gilmour is bound to return from his loan move next season and might want a place in the squad.

Thus, if there is a chance to churn out a reasonable profit from the sale of Kante, it might not be the worst thing to let him leave London. But ideally, the club should make sure that their gratitude for his services is reflected in any potential contract they put for him on the table.
Whether he accepts that or not would then be up to him, and there’s not much any of us can do about what he decides. His long-term future might be hazy. But for now, we should relish the fact that he plays for us and seek comfort in Romano’s claim that Chelsea are thinking about tying him down to a new contract, because after all, the 2021 Ballon d’Or nominee continues to be one of the top names in European football.
