Brendan Rodgers urges Leicester fans to abstain from harsh treatment of Chelsea player Ben Chilwell
Then Englishman is Foxes academy graduate, and he has a long history with the club. Before moving to Chelsea, he featured in 123 games in the white and royal blue jersey. But his move to Stamford Bridge came as a shock to Leicester fans.
The first instance happened in June 2020 when the 24-year-old was still a Leicester player. Leicester lost the match, and the frustrated fans took a shot at the player, who was casually joking with Chelsea players.
The English player was again poorly treated by the away fans at Wembley when he featured for the Blues against Leicester. In the FA cup final earlier this year, he was constantly booed by Foxes fans.
Leicester manager, Rodgers knows the history and urged his club fans to give better treatment to the former player who is set to return to his old stadium for the first time after changing teams.
The former Liverpool manager praised Chilwell and stated that it’s natural that players change clubs. He believes the English international didn’t commit any crime by doing such a thing.
“Players leave, and there can be a little bit of needle around that. But I can only speak for myself, Ben was a good guy and outstanding talent, and he decided to move on. He had the opportunity to leave, which he did do.”
He also suggested that the move didn’t hurt the Foxes performance as a quality substitute was available for the position. Eventually, the club made an adequate profit from the sale, which positively resulted from his departure. Finally, he urged the home fans to give him a proper welcome this time.
“He was ready to move on himself. And when you’re off that mindset, we knew we already had a pipeline to try and prepare for the next one is coming in, the likes of James Justin. There was no animosity, and the club did very well as a result in terms of his fee. And now he’s taking on a new challenge. I’d hope he’d get a really good welcome back.”
