“We will see”- Tuchel unsure of handing underused Chelsea summer signing a start in EFL Cup tie

Thomas Tuchel suggests that a decision has not been made on Saul Niguez before the EFL Cup game vs Southampton

According to The Mirror, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has not guaranteed that Saul Niguez would be involved in the Carabao Cup tie against Southampton. The Blues will be facing the Saints tonight at Stamford Bridge in the round of 16.

Atletico Madrid loanee joined the Champions League winners back in the summer for a loan fee of £3.4m. The English club also have the option to make the move permanent by activating an optional clause that costs £30m.

However, Saul has struggled with getting game time as his debut was far from the best start he would have liked to have. He also has fallen down the pecking order as others have taken their chances unlike him.

“I have not decided yet if he plays or not, we will see but these are the moments, in the Carabao Cup, to give some players some minutes. Still, it needs to make sense and we need to be fair to the players in his position.”

It seems that the Spaniard will be having it tough to get into the starting lineup as he is down the pecking order. But the 26-year-old would be hoping to get a decent amount of minutes to have a better showing.

“Do we have his position available? That position where he can show his potential and then get better and better. Let’s see. It is not decided yet but in general, yes.”
