“It was just one game”- Tuchel claims Chelsea needed some ‘luck’ to achieve astounding 7-0 win against Norwich City

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel highlights the role of luck in 7-0 win against Norwich City

Speaking in the post-match interview to BT Sport (h/t football.london) following a 7-0 win for his team against Norwich City, Thomas Tuchel claimed that luck played its role in Chelsea achieving such an astounding scoreline.

The Blues began the game without Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner in the squad, with the attacking duo sidelined for this game due to injury. What was supposed to be a tricky encounter against a newly promoted side turned out to be a complete whitewash.

The Blues ran rampant on the day. A Mason Mount hat-trick was the cherry on top as Chelsea put 7 past the visitors to remain top of the Premier League table.

Mount’s second goal came from the penalty spot in the 85th minute but only after the penalty was retaken as Tim Krul’s feet was found to be off the line for his initial penalty save.

Tuchel happy with the result

The Blues were otherwise dominant and completely controlled the game. However, the former PSG and Borussia Dortmund boss believes that a bit of luck was still required to achieve such an eyebrow-raising scoreline.

“We had a good performance, we were sharp and put in a lot of effort. The result was that we had high pressing, many ball wins, created lots of chances and we were very precise today.”

To score seven you maybe need a bit of luck but it was a good effort. That will not stop, this was just one game. We are up for a challenge again on Tuesday and they will have to prove it again. All the credit but it is only one game.”

Tuchel is perhaps being a bit modest here. Ben Gibson was sent off in the 64th minute but by then, the Blues were already 5-0 up and looked like widening the scoreline even when it was 11v11.

Chelsea are now 4 points clear at the top of the table with 23 goals scored in 9 games- the most so far in the league out of all PL teams. Liverpool, however, have a game in hand but would still fail to overtake them on points even if they beat Manchester United on Sunday.
