Transfer News: Serie A giants could offer €80m Chelsea flop a second chance in the big time

Juventus are interested in signing Chelsea star Kepa Arrizabalaga in January

According to TuttoJuve (h/t ESPN), Kepa Arrizabalaga is said to be on the radar of Italian giants Juventus as they look to add competition in their goalkeeping spot. Chelsea could be open to selling the Spaniard as they look to cut costs in the January transfer window.

The 27-year-old is the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of football after the Blues paid a fee of €80m to Athletic Bilbao for his services in 2018. However, his time at Stamford Bridge has been largely disappointing and he has not justified the transfer fee so far.

Kepa lost his place to Edouard Mendy in the first XI and could now be allowed to leave. The goalkeeper curiously enough saved penalties in shoot-outs and became the first Blues goalkeeper to do so. It is, however, difficult to look past Mendy who continues to remain a reliable last line of defence.

It is said that Juve are looking to add more competition for Wojciech Szczesny and have earmarked Kepa as a target. The Bianconeri are said to facilitate the departure of Mattia Perin should they decide to sign Kepa.

It is claimed that Massimiliano Allegri’s side will be making an offer to Chelsea in the upcoming January transfer window. It is plausible that they will be making a loan offer with a mandatory option to buy on cheap.

A fresh beginning?

Arrizabalaga, got his part, could decide to look elsewhere as his time at the English club is not likely to turn around. The keeper has started just two games this season and came on as a substitute in the UEFA Super Cup final.

At 27, he still has years left in him and could go on to reinvent himself elsewhere. Given the form Mendy is in, it is difficult to see Kepa overtake him in the Chelsea pecking order.

While the Spain international has been better recently, it is clear that he has been displaced as the club’s starting goalkeeper. A move away from Chelsea seems to be in the best interest of all parties looking at the circumstances.
