Report: Veteran Chelsea ace drawing interest from South America as his contract winds down

Fluminense interested in Chelsea star Thiago Silva as his contract winds down

According to TuttoMercatoWeb (h/t Football.London), Brazilian club Fluminense is said to be interested in securing the signature of Thiago Silva as his contract is set to expire at the end of 2021-22 season.

Silva joined the Blues on a free transfer after his contract expired with Paris Saint-Germain in 2020. Despite being in the latter end of his career, the centre-back has proven integral during his time at Stamford Bridge.

The 37-year-old has not agreed to renewal and looks set to leave the club next season. An extension was activated last year which allowed him to stay with Thomas Tuchel’s side for one more season.

The Brazil international started his career with the South American club and have made 80 appearances for them. He eventually left them and joined AC Milan for a fee of £9m back in 2009.

Speaking to TNT Sports back in January (h/t Football.London), the Brazilian had expressed his desire to rejoin Tricolor in the future. He also conveyed his dream to challenge the Copa Libertadores as lost the final in 2008.

“I do have this dream of returning to wearing the shirt of Fluminense, everyone knows my desire. It’s a difficult decision to be made, but I’m really thinking with great affection and suddenly have this Libertadores mission again.”

With Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen also set to become free agents next summer, Chelsea could very well be left with no senior centre backs to choose from. Hopefully, a resolution can be reached with the duo as soon as possible.

Tuchel’s side would need to find a suitable replacement in the backline to compensate for his departure. There have been links to Matthijs de Ligt and Jules Kounde and they could prove to be a solid signing should that happen.
