Chelsea rekindle interest in £68million La Liga defender with a centre-back reshuffle on the cards

Chelsea to make a move for Jules Kounde in January amidst potential Rudiger and Christensen exits

According to The Athletic (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are expected to reignite their interest in the Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde as they risk losing Antonio Rudiger in the summer. The German is in the final months of his contract and is yet to agree on a contract extension amidst interest from other clubs.

This uncertainty has seen Chelsea rekindle their interest in Kounde. It is said that Marina Granovskaia is going to make another attempt to get the £68million Sevilla centre-back after showing interest in him earlier this summer.

28-year-old’s contract will expire next summer meaning he can walk away on a free. However, he wants to continue at the club but have not been able to agree on the monetary terms regarding the renewal.

According to Goal (h/t The Sun), Andreas Christensen has stalled contract negotiations with the Blues and it is said that there have been no contacts between the player and the club for two months.

Christensen’s contract is also said to expire in 2022 meaning the Blues could lose another one of their centre-backs for nothing. It is stated that financial returns are the reason why a deal wasn’t reached between the two parties.

The defensive duo has been key for Thomas Tuchel and has played a major role in becoming the Premier League leaders. Their efforts helped the club to concede only three goals in nine games, which is the best in the league.

The Champions League winners could be in trouble if their defensive duo leaves the club looking at their defensive stability. Add to it the fact that Thiago Silva is also set to be a free agent next summer and Chelsea’s problem appears paramount.

They could offset the situation with the signing of the 22-year-old Kounde. However, there are still ways to go before they land him.
