Romano provides a positive update on Chelsea’s efforts to extend defender’s contract

Fabrizio Romano reveals Chelsea have already agreed with Andreas Christensen to extend his current deal

According to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Chelsea have already reached an agreement with Andreas Christensen to extend his current contract.

The Danish international is one of the senior centre-backs in Thomas Tuchel’s squad. Alongside Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger, he holds the key to what has been a rather solid defensive setup at the Bridge.

Christensen has been at Chelsea since 2012. He is ready to extend his stay and has already agreed to a new contract. As things stand, the final clauses and paperwork is yet to be completed.

According to Romano, two clubs had shown interest in securing the player’s services. However, this will amount to nothing given the agreement he already has with the Blues.

It was imperative that a quick resolution be reached. Christensen’s contract at the club runs until 2022 and now that an agreement is close to be signed, Chelsea can now focus their attention elsewhere.

Rudiger too is in a similar boat and could leave on a free next summer. Unlike Christensen, Chelsea are yet to reach an agreement with the German international. Hopefully, it too shall soon be resolved.

With Thiago Silva not getting any younger and the issues regarding Rudiger’s future, Tuchel has a few important decisions to make in the coming months.

Even once Christensen signs his contract, it is imperative that the Blues add to their centre-back roster either in January or next summer. Not doing so could undo a lot of the good work done by the recruitment team in the past few windows.

Christensen’s decision augurs well for the club going into the new year. The Dane has so far made 135 appearances for the club. From the looks of it, there are many more to come.
