Transfer News: Spanish giants join the race to sign 25-year-old Chelsea star

Atletico Madrid have joined the race to sign Chelsea ace Timo Werner

According to Goal, cited by TransferMarketWeb (h/t football.london), Chelsea ace Timo Werner is now on the radar of Atletico Madrid.

The former RB Leipzig centre-forward signed for the Blues last summer as part of the £200million Frank Lampard forked out to build his team. The German also started on the right path as he won two penalties in his opening two games before scoring twice against Southampton.

However, that was followed up by a dark period where the striker failed to score for 1000 Premier League minutes. Although Thomas Tuchel used him prominently last season during the club’s road to Champions League triumph, they brought in Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan this summer.

While Werner did feature in the UEFA Super Cup final as well as the season opener against Crystal Palace, he has suffered for game-time since then.

The 25-year-old’s next start for the club came 10 days ago in the EFL Cup third round against Aston Villa. The German ended up scoring the only goal for the club on the day. However, he failed to produce the same form against Manchester City last weekend but earned all the plaudits this weekend against Southampton when he scored Chelsea’s 2nd goal.

While he is hitting good form now, there is no certainty of game-time given the talent at the club. Thus, there is a lot of speculation over his future, and it was also said that he has been in contact with his former coach Julian Nagelsmann, who is the current boss at Bayern Munich.

However, Atletico Madrid have also joined the race now as they seem keen on adding some attacking reinforcements to their side. Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann are above the age of 30 or will turn so next year, and Werner could provide a youthful approach.

Regardless, it remains to be seen whether Tuchel would actually let one of his centre-forward options leave any time soon as he looks to win the biggest silverware in England.
