Chelsea ready to break the bank to sign 22-year-old Serie A defensive star

Transfer News: Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich ready to break their record to sign Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus as

According to transfer news from AS (h/t Express), Chelsea boss Roman Abramovich is ready to make a push to sign Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus in 2022.

The Blues added the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Saul Niguez this summer, with the former being signed for a club-record deal worth £97.5million. However, it does not look like that record is going to stand beyond this season.

The Stamford Bridge outfit have made the signing of a ‘young defender’ a priority for 2022 and are targeting Dutch centre-back Matthijs de Ligt. The 22-year-old joined Juventus back in the summer of 2019 and has since gone on to win the Serie A title with the Old Lady.

Still very young, the former Ajax captain can add a lot of quality and also provide a youthful approach to Chelsea’s backline. Also, given that Thiago Silva will be out of contract next summer, signing another player in that role is a clever move.

The Blues are also said to be ready to splurge £102million for the centre-back, according to AS (h/t Express). In fact, Roman Abramovich is ‘personally advocating’ to orchestrate a deal for the defender.

Moreover, there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the future of Antonio Rudiger as the German has entered into the final year of his contract and is yet to sign an extension on his current deal. Additionally, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and PSG have been linked with the 28-year-old.

The Blues had also tried to lure Jules Kounde to Stamford Bridge this summer, but Sevilla were unwilling to accept the £43million bid made by the club. Thus, the attention has now shifted to De Ligt as Thomas Tuchel looks to bolster his defensive options in 2022.
