Thomas Tuchel believes Romelu Lukaku has what it takes to be a Chelsea captain
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, Thomas Tuchel revealed how summer signing Romelu Lukaku has a lot of the qualities to be Chelsea captain.
Tuchel, who arrived at the club back in January, has enjoyed a largely successful time at the West London club as he has won the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and also reached the FA Cup final last season.
The German boss strengthened in the attack area this summer as the Blues signed Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan for a club-record deal of £97.5million.
The investment has paid off so far as the Belgian has 4 goals to his name in 4 appearances and might already have one eye on the Premier League Golden Boot. However, it is the 28-year-old’s off-the-pitch involvement that has also been noticed by Tuchel.
The former PSG manager firmly believes that Lukaku has a lot of the qualities to be a captain. He explained this during an interview, saying (h/t Sky Sports):
“He’s (Lukaku) a very democratic communicator – he treats everybody with the same respect, the same attitude. He is a highest-level competitor – he loves training, he has a smile on his face, he wants to win every single competition. This is good. He leads by example.”
When asked if the striker could be a captain, Tuchel replied (h/t Sky Sports):
“Yes, I think he could be. He has a lot of things you need to be a captain.”

Although it does not look like the Blues need a new leader any soon thanks to Cesar Azpilicueta, who has captained the side since the 2019/20 season after Gary Cahill’s departure from the club.
Regardless, fans of the West London club would be delighted to know that they have leaders throughout the team and certainly have one in their star summer signing.
