“Others stepped up”- Chelsea legend cites Super Cup final to praise unity in Tuchel’s side

Petr Cech explains ‘unity’ within players at Chelsea in the last few months

Speaking to Chelsea’s official website (h/t The Mirror), Petr Cech talked about the unity within the Chelsea players as he gave the example of the UEFA Super Cup final last month.

The Blues, who won their 2nd-ever UEFA Champions League back in May, got automatic qualification into the final of the UEFA Super Cup, which was set to be played against the UEFA Europa League winners Villarreal.

The West London club had not made a single signing up until the day of the final, while some players had also just returned to training from international duty. However, the Blues took the lead thanks to a Hakim Ziyech goal but conceded the equalizer midway through the second half.

Eventually, the game went into extra time, and there was no separating the two. Just as the game was about to go into penalties, Thomas Tuchel brought off Edouard Mendy for Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Petr Cech pointed out this incident and said that the fact that Mendy was not disheartened by this shows the ‘unity’ within the players. Referencing the substitution in the Super Cup, Petr Cech told the official Chelsea website (h/t The Mirror):

“This is something that we have to really appreciate because it just shows the strong unity within the team, that people respect decisions like that from the manager…So you might not play every game as a player, but it still doesn’t mean you are less important than everybody else.

“The Super Cup and the situation with the shoot-out proved that, as well as the start of the season where some people were coming late and were missing but the others stepped up”.
