Chelsea star Jorginho reveals he was close to Manchester City move in 2018
Speaking to BT Sport (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea star Jorginho went on to reveal how close he was to signing for Manchester City in 2018. While he admitted that such things are a part of football, he added that he was happy at Chelsea now.
The Italian midfielder was hot property back in 2018. He was the fulcrum of Maurizio Sarri’s impressive Napoli side that had pushed Juventus all the way in the Serie A title race that season. Chelsea eventually managed to get Sarri first. Then they got their hands on Jorginho for a rather sizable £50million.
Jorginho was heavily criticized during his first season but he did not let that affect him. He kept his head down and put in the solid displays. Over the last season, he would go on to establish himself as one of the most important players for Chelsea. His contributions helped Chelsea lift the Champions League and Super Cup. Add to that, he was a central part of Italy’s successful EURO 2020 campaign.
Jorginho was awarded the UEFA Men’s Player of the year for his performances. With a game to play against Manchester City today, Jorginho made a revelation that he was indeed close to joining them instead of Chelsea back in 2018.
‘It was close but it didn’t happen. It’s how it works in football sometimes. I’m very, very happy at Chelsea. It’s a massive club and everyone here at the moment, the atmosphere is so good because everyone is humble. That’s why everything is going so well.’
