According to a report released by CIES Football Observatory (h/t Mirror), Chelsea have been ranked 5th on the most expensive squads in Europe’s Top 5 Leagues.
The Blues invested heavily in Romelu Lukaku this summer as they shelled out £97.5million for the Belgian, making him the club’s record-breaking signing.
Last season, the Stamford Bridge outfit shelled out nearly £200million on transfers as they brought in the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Edouard Mendy, Hakim Ziyech, while Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr joined the club on a free transfer.
Havertz nearly broke the club-record signing last season when he arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for £71million, a figure very close to the money spent by the London club to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 (£71.6million).
Thus, it is no surprise that the Blues comprise one of the most expensive squads, which has now been confirmed by a report of the CIES Football Observatory (h/t Mirror). The West London club have been said to have the 5th most expensive squad in Europe’s Top 5 Leagues with a value of £669million.
Although the Stamford Bridge outfit are high up in this list, they do not possess the most expensive squad in England. That accolade would go to Manchester City, whose squad has a value of £926million after they spent £100million on the signing of Jack Grealish and broke the British transfer record.
However, given that the Blues have now spent handsomely and possess one of the most expensive squads in Europe’s Top 5 Leagues, more silverware could be around the corner as Thomas Tuchel looks to actively compete on all fronts this season.
