Ligue 1 giants planning to sign 28-year-old Chelsea star on a free transfer

Transfer News: Chelsea ace Antonio Rudiger is on the radar of Paris Saint-Germain

According to Le 10 Sport (h/t ESPN), Paris Saint Germain are weighing up a free transfer move for Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger as the German enters the final year of his contract.

Rudiger, who has featured prominently for the Blues ever since his move in 2017, fell down the pecking order under former manager Frank Lampard. However, the German became a favourite again when new boss Thomas Tuchel was appointed to take over the reins at Stamford Bridge.

Since January, the 28-year-old has cemented a spot for himself in the centre-back area and has become a key man in Tuchel’s setup. All in all, the German made 34 appearances across all competitions last season and was a vital part of the club securing a Top 4 finish and a place in the FA Cup final.

The centre-back was also impressive in the club’s run to UEFA Champions League glory as he helped the defence keep several clean sheets while he also provided a crucial assist in the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.

However, the 28-year-old has now entered into the final year of his contract and is yet to sign an extension on his current deal. The defender was previously said to be weighing up his options before signing an extension, but the German international is now being targeted by French giants Paris Saint Germain. (h/t ESPN).

If the centre-back does choose to run down his contract, he would be available on a free transfer for the Ligue 1 club next year.

However, this might not be a big issue for the Blues as they already have the likes of Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta, Trevoh Chalobah, Andreas Christensen, and Malang Sarr in their ranks, while they are also touted to eye a move for Jules Kounde again in January.

While that is the case, only time will tell whether the German does decide to make the switch away from Stamford Bridge at the end of this season.
