Romelu Lukaku reveals how he pushed through Chelsea move from Inter Milan
Speaking to HLN (h/t Express), Romelu Lukaku revealed how he had to step in to push through a move to Chelsea. The big Belgian claimed that Inter Milan had rejected a couple of swap deals and then he had to talk to the club to allow him to leave.
Chelsea can be pleased with the business they have done over the summer. They needed a world-class goal scorer and they made sure they moved heaven and earth to get one. Romelu Lukaku was re-signed by Chelsea for a club-record transfer fee of £97.5m. With Lukaku at the tip of the attack, Chelsea now have a solution to their problems of last season.
However, it was easier said than done. Getting Lukaku proved to be a huge challenge as he was happy at Inter after winning the Serie A. Chelsea had several offers rebuffed in the initial stages, many of which were swap deals with players such as Davide Zappacosta. However, those proved to be futile.
It was then that Lukaku had to get involved after getting informed about so many offers from Chelsea. That seemed to have changed his mind and then he decided to talk to the club.
“With Chelsea’s third offer I knew it was serious and my head was no longer in Milan. Chelsea offered €110 million-plus Zappacosta, but Inter said no. I went to Inzaghi’s office to find an agreement. I was at Inter, but my mind was already at Chelsea. Inter pulled me out of sh*t, I would have left the Nerazzurri only for the Blues.”
