Transfer News: London rivals steal a march on Chelsea in £13m move for Ligue 1 starlet

Transfer News: Pape Matar Sarr close to joining Tottenham Hotspur amidst Chelsea interest

According to the Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur have taken the lead in the race to land Chelsea transfer target and Metz midfielder, Pape Matar Sarr.

The 18-year-old midfielder has garnered much attention in the past year or so courtesy of his performances for the Ligue 1 outfit. He is already a starter for Metz and is a crucial part of their first-team set-up.

The interest from Chelsea, Manchester United, and Spurs comes as little surprise given his displays in France. It is evident that he has the potential to be a top-quality midfielder in the near future.

But it seems like the North Londoners are stealing a march on Sarr. The report mentions that Spurs are closing in on a £13million deal for one of Europe’s hottest midfield prospects.

Sarr to Spurs?

That would come as a blow to the Blues if they were serious in their interest. The midfielder is not afraid to put in a tackle or two, and can play in a dynamic box-to-box role with an ‘eye for goal‘.

Chelsea saw a teenage midfielder in Lewis Bate depart to Leeds United earlier in the summer. With Jorginho and N’Golo Kante nearing the end of their prime years in the near future, the Blues could do with some future-proofing in midfield.

In that regard, the club have two up and coming midfielders in Conor Gallagher and Billy Gilmour. The duo is being honed for the future after being sent out on loan to Crystal Palace and Norwich City respectively this summer.

Potentially losing out on Sarr would not sting much if the Scottish international, Gilmour, can shape himself into a successor for any one of Chelsea’s current midfielder stars. But that is something we can only find out as time passes.
