According to transfer news from The Athletic (subscription required), Chelsea might have to abandon their pursuit of Jules Kounde.
Despite having a solid set of central defenders, Thomas Tuchel was keen to add another name to the side. After all, the likes of Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta are not exactly spring chickens and will need replacing in the future. In light of this, Chelsea’s pursuit of Kounde this summer made sense.
The Sevilla starlet has been on Chelsea’s radar after his performance for the club. He was a part of the side that won the 2020 Europa League as well as finishing in the top four last season. However, from the looks of it, Chelsea are unlikely to get this deal over the line due to Sevilla’s increased asking price.
The Spanish club have asked for €15 million extra and that has put Chelsea in a spot to an extent that they have stopped progress on the deal altogether. The Blues believed they had some sort of agreement already over a fee but that has not proved to be the case. If Sevilla do not decrease the asking price, the Blues are prepared to walk away from the deal.
Chelsea had prepared well for the signing of Kounde with the sale of Kurt Zouma but this last-minute swerve from Sevilla was perhaps unforeseen. There is still some hope if Sevilla reduce the price but at this stage, it looks unlikely. This might be an option Chelsea may have to revisit in the future.
