“Now I’m ready”: Chelsea’s blockbuster summer signing opens up on talks with Tuchel over his role

Romelu Lukaku reveals talks with Thomas Tuchel over role at Chelsea

According to the Mirror, Romelu Lukaku has revealed that he has held talks with Thomas Tuchel about his role at Chelsea. The big Belgian claimed that he is flexible enough to do what Tuchel will ask of him in order to help the team in the best way.

Chelsea managed to rectify the one significant problem they had last season – getting goals from their strikers. After their UCL triumph, if they were to push themselves to the next level, a new and prolific striker was needed who could lead the line with ease. Thus they turned to a familiar face in Romelu Lukaku.

They went ahead and splashed a club-record £97.5million to bring him back to the Bridge seven years after he left. Lukaku completed his move last week but a mandatory quarantine meant that he missed Chelsea’s opening Premier League game against Crystal Palace. Chelsea won the match regardless.

Lukaku spoke to Tuchel about his role at Chelsea

It was expected that the former Inter Milan striker would participate in training from the start of this week. He could be set to make his second debut for the club over the weekend when Chelsea take on Arsenal in the London derby.

Lukaku was asked whether he has held talks with Tuchel over his role on the side. Here is what he had to say (h/t Mirror).

“Yes, of course! The conversation was really clear from him, that he wants me to be a presence and a leader in the team. I have to just use all my abilities to make sure I can help the team as much as possible. My role will depend on what the game plan is and what the boss wants me to do.

“If he wants me to be a focal point or if he wants me to attack the spaces in behind, I can do it. The two years in Italy helped me master all the facets of the game for a striker and now I’m ready.”

Lukaku added that he is experienced enough in the formation Tuchel deploys and can function in a two-man attack or lead the line all by himself. There are bound to be expectations for Lukaku’s debut for the club. A significant amount has been spent on him and Chelsea will need him to step up and function well with the side.
