Chelsea run rampant at 2021 UEFA Awards with four winners

Chelsea quartet win UEFA awards

Chelsea were quite the dominant side when it came to the UEFA awards. The Blues had nominations in almost all the categories and managed to bag four out of the six awards which were somewhat expected given the Blues did go on to win the Champions League, and two of their players were also a part of the EURO 2020 winning team.

First off, it was Thomas Tuchel who won the UEFA Coach of the year ahead of the likes of Pep Guardiola and Roberto Mancini. After all, Tuchel took only four months to entirely transform Chelsea and the award was recognition of his services.

Next up was Edouard Mendy. He was up for the Best Goalkeeper award and he won it competing against the likes of Ederson and Thibaut Courtois. The Senegalese shot-stopper kept 9 clean sheets from the 12 games played. He was a reliable presence on the rare occasions that Chelsea’s defence was breached.

There were two Chelsea midfielders in contention for the Best Midfielder award. However, it was the ever-present N’Golo Kante that won it ahead of Jorginho. It was not too bad for the latter though as he won the UEFA Player of the Year. After all, he completed the Champions League and EURO 2020 double and played a huge part in them.

The only category in which Chelsea missed out was the Best Defender which was won by Ruben Dias of Manchester City, pipping Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger. Chelsea had no nominations in the forwards category though.
