Report: 22-year-old Chelsea academy graduate set for loan spell despite impressing Tuchel in pre-season

Transfer News: Trevoh Chalobah set to depart Chelsea on a loan spell

According to football.london, Chelsea are set to loan out Trevoh Chalobah for this season despite the 22-year-old impressing Thomas Tuchel this pre-season.

Chlobah has featured for the Blues throughout their pre-season camp and has trained with the senior team. He was used by Tuchel as a defender in his defensive back three against Bournemouth, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal.

The Englishman, who has been with Chelsea since he was 8, has spent time out on loan at Ipswich Town, Huddersfield, and FC Lorient in France. But he was mostly used there as a midfielder.

Tuchel praised Chalobah after Chelsea’s 2-2 pre-season draw against Spurs, which was an indication that we could see the youngster with the senior team this coming season.

Chalobah to head out on loan

“We know him from Lorient and Chalo has done very well in pre-season. We wanted to continue in the back three, so there was space in the back until [Kurt] Zouma and Toni [Rudiger] arrived. Then there was one space left but then Andreas Christensen, Reece [James] and Azpi [Cesar Azpilicueta] are back then there is a huge competition for him. He’s done very well in both games and within his potential and limits that was nice to see.”

However, the report states that the amount of centre-backs currently on Chelsea’s books is the reason behind the 2021 UEFA Champions League winners wanting to loan him out.

And it does make sense. A spell away on loan can hand him more vital experience for when Chelsea need him in their backline, which could be as early as next year.
