Romano claims Chelsea could still land 26-year-old La Liga star as they ponder more additions

Chelsea could sign Saul Niguez before the end of the month

According to a tweet put out by Italian Journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are planning on signing a midfielder this summer, with Saul Niguez a ‘possibility’ for the Blues.

The West London outfit have only made two signings this summer in the form of Marcus Bettinelli, who they signed on a free transfer, while they have also signed Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan in a club-record move worth £97.5million

Thus, while this seemed to be it for the Blues, they are now interested in signing a central midfielder this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano, who confirmed the news on his official Twitter handle.

Saul is a ‘possibility’ for Chelsea this summer

He wrote:

“Chelsea will decide in the next few days whether to buy a new midfielder or not. Keeping an eye on Saúl Ñíguez, he’s considered “a possibility” – not advanced yet”.

Romano also confirmed that the Blues are still interested in signing Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde.

“Atletico Madrid will decide soon about Saúl’s future – Chelsea are still working on Kounde deal too”.

The London club have been short in midfield, especially after they brokered a loan move for Billy Gilmour, who will spend the rest of the season at Norwich. Moreover, the club are also on the verge of loaning out Tiemoue Bakayoko, with AC Milan closing in on signing the Frenchman.

Thus, signing a player of Saul’s quality makes perfect sense. The Spaniard has been an integral part of the Atletico midfield for several years now while he also helped the La Liga outfit win the league last year, ahead of giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

While the Blues are not necessarily famous for this but they could make a late swoop for the 26-year-old midfielder this summer if they choose to strengthen their midfield options.
