Report: EFL club in talks with Chelsea to sign forgotten midfield ace

Reading in talks with Chelsea for Danny Drinkwater

According to Reading Chronicle, Reading are in talks with Chelsea over a move for Danny Drinkwater. The English midfielder is back at Chelsea after his loan spell but could again be heading out as Reading are hoping to get him on a one-year loan. They are also expecting the Blues to pay most of his wages.

Chelsea really picked the short straw with Drinkwater back in 2017. Of course, little did they know that the signing would backfire so spectacularly. There was the hope that he could link up with N’Golo Kante as they did at Leicester City during their title win in 2016. Well, that has not happened.

Drinkwater was given chances initially but he was nowhere close to the quality he showed at Leicester. In total, he played 12 games for Chelsea. His loan spells to Burnley and Aston Villa were a disaster with a collective five league games played during that time. It was only last season at Kasimpasa that he managed to get some decent game time.

However, he is back at Chelsea and it looks like he might not stay for long. Championship side Reading have made enquiries for a loan deal for Drinkwater. They are in talks with Chelsea but will need the club to pay the majority of his wages during the loan. Drinkwater could be the second Chelsea player to move to Reading after Baba Rahman joined earlier.

Drinkwater has no place in the side if one were to be honest. The likes of Jorginho and Kante are regular starters and they are surely not going to be dropped. Loaning out Drinkwater might be a good idea but it remains to be seen if Chelsea take on an arrangement where they pay most of his salary.
