Trevoh Chalobah keen on fighting for a first-team spot at Chelsea
According to the Express & Star, Trevoh Chalobah is eager to continue in Chelsea’s starting line-up on the back of a memorable Premier League debut.
The 22-year-old, who featured in all three pre-season games for the Blues this campaign, was also an unlikely inclusion in the club’s starting line-up to face Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup final last week. Chalobah impressed in that game, and the Blues were eventually victorious on penalties.
However, Chalobah’s big moment arrived yesterday when he was named in the starting line-up against Crystal Palace, and the youngster was set to make his Premier League debut. While he did succeed in doing so, he capped off a fine defensive debut with a scorching strike as he scored the third and last goal of the game.
The 22-year-old was immediately overcome by emotions which is justified given that Chalobah is a product of the Cobham Academy and playing for the senior team is a rare occasion for any youngster. The centre-back talked about his journey to the senior team to the Chelsea website (h/t The Express & Star):
“When I first started pre-season, my aim was to impress the manager, day in, day out.
“He said I did well in the pre-season, but I was a bit surprised to start the Super Cup, but it shows my work has paid off.
However, Chalobah also mentioned how he took the opportunity handed to him by Tuchel and described playing for the senior team as a ‘long-held’ dream.
“He has given me the opportunity, and I have taken it with both hands. It’s important in football to stay consistent, stay grounded, stay hungry, and always want more”.
