Report: Roman Abramovich intervenes in Chelsea’s pursuit of 30-goal prolific hitman

Transfer News: Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich intervenes in Romelu Lukaku pursuit

According to Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb (h/t Mirror), Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has decided to personally intervene in the Blues’ pursuit of Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku.

The 28-year-old Belgian international, who spent three years on Chelsea’s books between 2011 and 2014, has enjoyed two stunning years in Italy since he signed for Inter Milan in 2019. Lukaku plundered 30 goals and set up 10 more in 2020/21, helping the Nerazzurri to their first Serie A title in over a decade.

With Chelsea in the hunt for a new striker this summer, a move for Lukaku has been touted heavily. And while Inter Milan have maintained their stance that the Belgian international striker will not be sold, the Blues’ owner, Roman Abramovich has now taken a personal interest in the matter, as per the report.

It is claimed that the Blues’ supremo is a huge admirer of Lukaku and wants to bring him back to the Bridge. To that end, he has now made a fresh play to try and secure his signing by sending his son to Italy to engineer a transfer. (h/t Mirror)

Indeed, the report claims that Abramovich Jr. is in Milan on a business trip and will try to persuade Lukaku to return to Chelsea in the ongoing transfer window.

More Chelsea News:

Quite how this pans out remains to be seen. Lukaku, on the back of his exploits and improved all-round game, would be a fine signing. At 28, he is in his peak years and should be able to deliver for the next three seasons at this level, at least.

But, whether he is willing to return and if Inter are ready to sanction a sale remains to be seen.
