Report: Chelsea keeping tabs on Serie A defensive ace impressing at Euros

Transfer News: Chelsea keeping tabs on Joakim Maehle

According to transfer news from Daily Star, Chelsea are keeping an eye on Joakim Maehle. The Danish defender has been in sublime form for his nation in the Euros. Chelsea are trying to sign Maehle as an alternative to Achraf Hakimi who is heading to PSG.

Chelsea are on the lookout for a right-sided wing-back. Thomas Tuchel switched the formation to a back three, meaning that wing-backs are now an important part of that. While Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta have done well in that role, they are more traditional full-backs, with the latter also on the wrong side of thirties.

The Blues initially went after Achraf Hakimi but they were unable to persuade him to join them. Now with Hakimi heading to PSG, Chelsea have turned their attention to one of this Euro’s stars. Joakim Maehle has been one of the standout performers for the Danish side that has already reached the quarter-finals.

A youth exponent of Danish club Aalborg, Maehle made his first-team debut in his homeland during the 2016-17 season before earning a move to Genk in the following summer. He eventually joined Atalanta last season and soon became an integral part of the side. Nonetheless, the Italian side are not willing to sell unless they get a substantial offer.

Chelsea could really do with a new wing-back. Although Maehle has played mostly in a full-back role, he has the experience of playing as a wing-back. The Dane is in good form and can be a very handy alternative to Achraf Hakimi.
