According to a report by The Athletic (Subscription Required), Chelsea ‘have initiated talks about an extension’ with Andreas Christensen, as his contract expires in the summer of 2022.
The Danish defender impressed under Thomas Tuchel last season in a back-three, which also featured the likes of Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Antonio Rudiger.
This is a wise move from Chelsea’s board considering the fact that Azpilicueta and Rudiger are also in the final 12 months of their contract.
The Danish international arrived at Stamford Bridge from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2017. Since then, he has progressed steadily to become one of Chelsea’s starting centre-backs in a squad filled with stars.
He has carried his Chelsea form with Denmark to the 2020 UEFA Euros as well. And the club is smart in initiating contract talks with him considering he is 25, perhaps approaching the prime of his career.
The report by The Athletic (Subscription Required) mentions that ‘director Marina Granovskaia has little leverage in the discussions’, which could be a cause for concern for the Blues faithful.
However, Christensen’s comments earlier this year in April should put their minds at ease. He described the Blues as his ‘second home’ and mentioned that he is in it for the long run.
“I’m in this for the long run and I always have been. I feel like this is my second home. Denmark will always be my home, but Chelsea will always be my place.”
The Dane’s moment of the season came in the following month, where he replaced an injured Thiago Silva to win Chelsea the UEFA Champions League against Manchester City.
