Jorginho was not able to put away his penalty kick in the tiebreaker but England’s three consecutive misses meant that Italy are the new European champions. It was nerve-racking till the last kick as England and Italy battled it out for 120 minutes at Wembley.
As England came ever so close, it was Italy who celebrated wild into the night. After all, they banished the demons of missing out on the 2018 World Cup and a trophy drought since 2006. Italy won all of their seven games in the tournament, a testament to their well-rounded squad.
Among several stars from Serie A, a certain Chelsea star perhaps shone throughout the tournament. Jorginho came into the tournament riding the high of a Champions League win with the Blues and showed that he has become an indispensable asset for the club and country.
Throughout the tournament, he did what he does best and controlled the games for Italy. His ice-cold penalty against Spain even sent Italy to the finals. When the spot-kicks were done and dusted against England at Wembley, Jorginho and Italy eventually triumphed.
Chelsea fans were visibly delighted with Jorginho who now has a EURO 2020 medal with Italy. Calls for him winning the Ballon d’Or continue to gather pace.
