Report: Chelsea unlikely to pursue 30-year-old superstar because of one vital factor

Transfer News: Chelsea unlikely to chase Barcelona superstar Antoine Griezmann

According to a report by Spanish outlet Marca (h/t Express), Chelsea are not going to pursue a transfer move for Barcelona forward, Antoine Griezmann, because of his age.

The Blues are said to have a strict policy regarding players above the age of 30. And that would prevent the Blues from approaching the former Atletico Madrid superstar.

The Frenchman joined the Catalan club in 2019 for a massive £107m fee. But after two somewhat underwhelming seasons, cash-strapped Barcelona are looking to move him on.

Chelsea are after Erling Haaland but would know that landing the Borussia Dortmund ace will not be an easy task. Despite that, the report mentions Chelsea, along with Liverpool, Manchester City, and Man United are not in the running for the French international.

No need for ‘Grizzi’

Thomas Tuchel does have a pretty young attack at Chelsea, with the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, and Callum Hudson-Odoi. Olivier Giroud, 34, has already been sold to AC Milan earlier this month.

A deal for the ex-Real Sociedad winger, Griezmann, would not make a lot of sense for Chelsea because, as mentioned above, he is unlikely to be a long-term target. It is wiser for the Blues to move for targets like Erling Haaland.

And even if that fails and they fail to bring in anyone during the window, Tuchel would still have a considerable attack at his disposal; one that won him the UEFA Champions League last season – minus Giroud, of course.

However, with Tammy Abraham and Hakim Ziyech on the transfer radars of Arsenal and AC Milan respectively, a new forward in the summer would certainly assuage the fears regarding Chelsea’s squad depth in the minds of the Blues faithful.
