Chelsea set to renew interest in 34-year-old free agent

Transfer News: Chelsea look to revisit Sergio Romero interest

According to Metro (h/t football.london), Sergio Romero is on the list of potential transfer targets for Chelsea in the goalkeeping department.

The Blues are looking to strengthen their squad and have been linked with names such as Wayne Hennessey and Marcus Bettineli recently. The former has now signed a contract with fellow Premier League side Burnley.

And Romero, who according to ESPN (h/t Football.london) was also on their wishlist last year in August, is now an option for the Blues. He is a free agent after being released by Manchester United earlier this summer.

Romero signed for the Red Devils in 2015 from AS Monaco but was never their first-choice goalkeeper. But now, he could be a good addition to the Blues squad.

Romero to the Bridge?

Edouard Mendy has impressed in goal under Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel. However, Kepa Arrizabalaga could leave the club, and Willy Caballero has already been released by the club after the end of his contract. (h/t Football.london)

Romero was a part of the Argentina side that made the final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Since then, the former Sampdoria man held down his position between La Albiceleste‘s goal.

Now without a team, joining a team like Chelsea would undoubtedly be a good option for any footballer in the twilight of his professional career. However, he would probably not see a lot of minutes.

If Kepa stays, the Spaniard could be the club’s second choice. And even if the former Athletic Bilbao man leaves, it’s hard to envisage Romero displacing Mendy from the goal.
