Chelsea linked with a surprise move for 34-year-old veteran goalkeeping star

Transfer News: Chelsea linked with surprise move for Wayne Hennessey

According to transfer news from Express, Chelsea have been linked with a shock move for Wayne Hennessey. The Welsh keeper could turn out to be the first signing under Thomas Tuchel. The 34-year-old Hennessey became a free agent after being released by Crystal Palace.

Prior to the 2020/21 season, Chelsea had a bit of a goalkeeping issue for two seasons. After Thibaut Courtois left the club in 2018, Kepa was signed for a record fee to fill the gap. The young Spaniard came in with an impressive stint at Bilbao and was expected to take the mantle for a long time.

However, error-strewn performances over two seasons meant that Chelsea were forced to bring in another keeper. Edouard Mendy was installed as the first choice for the club and the Senegalese repaid their faith in him. Nonetheless, Chelsea are now a little light in the keeper department after Willy Caballero was released.

Due to that, Chelsea have been linked with a rather surprising move for Wayne Hennessey. The Welsh shot-stopper was recently released from Crystal Palace and could well be Thomas Tuchel’s first-ever signing at the club. He is likely to be playing the third choice at the club if signed.

While this may not be the star signing Chelsea fans might have been expecting, it is a necessary one. The Blues are without a third keeper and Hennessey is an experienced man between the sticks.
