According to transfer news from Express, Chelsea are now on alert as Sergio Ramos officially leaves Real Madrid. The Blues along with Manchester United were two of the clubs keeping tabs on the situation. Now, the decorated Spanish defender can be signed on a free transfer.
The 35-year-old’s departure will bring to an end what has been a trophy-laden 16 years at the Santiago Bernabeu. During this time, he made 671 appearances, scoring 101 goals and making 40 assists (h/t Transfermarkt). He has won all there is to be won during that time.
With his contract expiring at the end of the month, an extension was not achieved due to various possible reasons. Contract talks had been dragging on for a while but it looked as if the club captain would be exiting the club in the summer as a free agent.
Now, it has been officially confirmed that Ramos will be leaving Real at the end of this month. Chelsea have been alerted to the same after being linked to Ramos for a while now. Tuchel is keen on adding a new defender and Chelsea could do so by signing the World Cup winner on a free transfer.
Ramos may not be a spring chicken anymore at 35 but he is a ferocious presence on the pitch. His leadership qualities are to behold and Chelsea can bring in the player on a short-term deal to add to their defence. Much like the Thiago Silva deal, Ramos can be a similar one with a similar effect.
