According to transfer news from Fichajes (h/t Express), struggling Chelsea star Timo Werner is wanted by Real Madrid. New manager Carlo Ancelotti has apparently asked the Spanish club to sign the German striker.
Werner was one of the hottest strikers in Europe when Chelsea threw the cash for him. He had shown his goal-scoring prowess for RB Leipzig over the last few seasons. However, one can safely say Werner was not a hit at Chelsea in his debut season. His goal tally dropped spectacularly over the season compared to his last year at Leipzig.
It has been an all too familiar sight of Werner missing chance after chance. The 25-year-old squandered several easy chances in league games as well as the FA Cup final. It might have cost Chelsea dearly but in the end, they did win the Champions League.
Hence, it is rather surprising that Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti are said to be after the striker. The new manager has asked the board to get Werner alongside a few other names. Chelsea, on the other hand, are not entirely opposed to a sale for the German. (h/t Express)
It is understandable that Werner struggled given he is playing in a whole different league with new players. There was also a managerial change that would have had some effect. However, with Real Madrid’s interest in the striker, it could represent an interesting dilemma for Chelsea on whether to cash in on him.
