Chelsea News: Antonio Rudiger continues to reject contract talks

According to news from Mirror, Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger is refusing to start talks over a contract renewal. The German is currently with his national side in the Euros. The 28-year-old’s current deal with the Champions League winners runs out in a year.

Antonio Rudiger had slipped to the fringes under Frank Lampard in the first half of the season. However, as soon as Thomas Tuchel took over, he became one of the first names on the team sheet. He has started 24 out of 28 games under Tuchel, only missing 3 games. He played a vital part in Chelsea’s top-four finish and Champions League win.

Even after his resurgence this season, there remain question marks over his future. The Blues could lose the former Roma man for nothing next season if a new deal is not agreed soon. He was linked with an exit last summer with Spurs keen to take him across London.

Now, Chelsea are in a real spot of bother. His existing deal with the club runs out in a year. From January, he would be able to talk to other clubs over a pre-contract and leave for free next summer. The defender is pushing back contract talks as he is considering how he was frozen out under Frank Lampard. He wants to see how things go over the season before committing.

However, Chelsea are running out of time to secure his future. Given how he has become a vital part of Tuchel’s new-look side, it is imperative that Chelsea convince the defender to put pen to paper on a new deal soon. While Rudiger’s concerns are understandable, the situation is now different to what it was a year back. He is one of the first names on the team sheet under Tuchel and should reconsider his stance.
