Chelsea to rival Manchester United for this 26-year-old La Liga star rated at around £40m

Transfer News: Chelsea to rival Manchester United for Saul Niguez

According to transfer news from The Sun, Chelsea will battle Manchester United for the signing of Saul Niguez. Atletico have warmed up to the idea of selling him for less than his huge £128m release clause as the Premier League rivals fight for his services.

The 26-year-old has been a key part of Diego Simeone’s stellar Atletico side the past few years. His role in the side has somewhat diminished this season, making him seek a new challenge elsewhere. He made 41 appearances in all competitions as they won the La Liga title this season. However, of his 33 appearances in La Liga, only 22 have come as starts.

Much like the rest of Europe, Atleti are feeling the pinch of the pandemic in a financial sense. They are in a position that would require them to sell players first in order to sign new ones. That has led them to consider a sale for the Spanish midfielder for less than his £128m release clause.

Manchester United and Bayern Munich have been the prominent clubs chasing the midfielder. However, it has now been reported that Chelsea and PSG have put themselves in the fray for his signature. It has also been claimed that Atleti will ask for around £40m for Saul.

Chelsea could well throw in that amount easily. However, they are expected to sell the likes of Tiemoue Bakayoko in order to fund any such moves. A versatile midfielder, Saul’s addition to the side can be a huge boost as Chelsea look to challenge for the big trophies again next season.
