According to transfer news from The Athletic (subscription required), Chelsea might have to pass up the chance to sign Erling Haaland. It has been said that whatever hopes Chelsea had in luring the Dortmund striker have now gone after the German side secured Champions League football for next season.
The Norwegian hitman has taken Europe by storm with his goal-scoring exploits for RB Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund. In 59 outings for the latter, he has scored 57 goals. Chelsea have held an interest in the player for a while now, but may not make a move for him this summer.
There is a £65m release clause in his contract, which activates only in 2022. Nonetheless, there had been claims that the German club could cash in on the 20-year-old this summer by demanding a figure more than the release clause.
However, all that could be for nought as it has been reported that Chelsea will have to pass up the chance to sign Haaland. Whatever hope they held in signing him went down once Dortmund secured Champions League football for next season. While Dortmund weren’t keen on selling earlier itself, now they don’t have to.
It seemed like Haaland would be the solution to Chelsea’s attacking woes. But apparently, Chelsea could have to look in another direction if they want to add another number 9 in the squad. Chelsea have the financial clout to pull off a deal but it looks like Haaland might be staying at Dortmund for at least another season.
