Transfer blow as Chelsea are set to miss out on Premier League superstar to Spanish giants

Transfer News: Sergio Aguero to join Barcelona as Chelsea set to miss out

According to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano (h/t football.london), Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is set to snub Chelsea in order to join Barcelona.

The Blues have been heavily linked with the Argentine striker as they look to strengthen the frontline. Olivier Giroud is not getting younger, Tammy Abraham’s future remains up in the air, and Timo Werner is not raking in big numbers for goals.

In such a scenario, the Blues could need to get two instead of a single striker. But that will not be Sergio Aguero, if the report is to be believed, which mentions that he is ready to accept a contract at Barcelona that would last until 2023.

The City striker is set to leave as a free agent in the summer after running down his deal at the Etihad. Three clubs were believed to have approached him, but his priority was always Barcelona. (h/t football.london)

Big chance missed

The 32-year-old is said to be taking a paycut in order to join the Spanish giants that will see him earn roughly £8.6million a year. This comes as a significant blow to the Blues.

Despite Aguero’s injury record and lack of game time this season, he is still one of the best strikers in Europe. Manchester United have done well with Edinson Cavani, who is 34, and Thomas Tuchel could have used someone like Aguero in that role.

The former Atletico Madrid striker has proved his goal-scoring pedigree at City for a decade and Chelsea could have done with an experienced striker like him. But it’s not the end of the world.
