Pundit admits mistake over initial assessment of Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel

Micah Richards backtracks on initial assessment of Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea

Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, former Manchester City defender turned pundit, Micah Richards has acknowledged that he was wrong in his initial assessment of Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel took over the reins as the manager of Chelsea back in January earlier this year, following the sacking of Frank Lampard after a run of disappointing results. Richards, upon the announcement, had questioned Chelsea’s decision to appoint the German while also lashing out at the German’s achievements with Paris Saint-Germain.

“What have Chelsea seen in Tuchel that convinces them he will outwit Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp? I struggle to see it happening.”

However, having seen Tuchel turn things around brilliantly at Stamford Bridge in over three months, Richards has backtracked on his initial stance, accepting that he was wrong about the Chelsea boss.

Indeed, since becoming the Chelsea manager, Tuchel has taken the team into the top four while also guiding the side to the finals of the FA Cup as well as the UEFA Champions League, where we will be facing Richards’ former team, Manchester City.

“What I recognise, however, is that my initial stance on Tuchel has proven to be wrong. Chelsea appointed him to win the Champions League. He might just deliver them the biggest prize of all.”

Tuchel masterminded a brilliant win over Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League semi-final while he has also been able to oust Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp in his first season in-charge at the Bridge.

Going by current form, we should be able to end the season with at least one trophy, if not two. And, credit to Tuchel for bringing about such a huge turnaround within the team.
