Chelsea are the Champions of Europe, as they defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the finals of the UEFA Champions League on Saturday at Estadio Do Dragao.
Coming into the game as the underdogs against the Premier League champions, the Blues were the better team in what was a tightly-contested, highly-entertaining affair.
Things did not look all too great when Timo Werner missed a few chances, but the Blues kept causing the Cityzens problems and the goal eventually came in the 42nd minute through Kai Havertz.
Post the half-time break, Pep Guardiola’s men pushed in search of an equaliser but Chelsea held firm. In fact, the Blues could have gone 2-0 up if not for Christian Pulisic missing a straightforward chance. That, however, did not come to bite us back as Thomas Tuchel’s warriors held on to their narrow lead to pull off a famous victory.
It was a stunning display from the entire team. Werner, despite missing the chances, ran the channels and scared the City defence. Havertz could not have chosen a better time to score his first Champions League goal, N’Golo Kante did what he does best.
Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta came up with big blocks at the back, Reece James and Ben Chilwell hardly let any breathing space for the City wingers. Andreas Christensen, coming on for the injured Thiago Silva, put his body on the line to stop a goal late on.
And, deservedly, Chelsea won their second UEFA Champions League trophy, nine years after having lifted the last one. Fans were in jubilant mood after the outcome of the game and took to social media to celebrate the success.
