According to transfer news from Express, Rene van der Gijp feels that Hakim Ziyech should exit Chelsea now that Frank Lampard is not there. The former Dutch player felt happy that Ziyech joined the club but that was only due to Lampard being there.
The Moroccan joined the club amid fanfare this past summer, with a deal being agreed last season itself. He came to England in scintillating form for Ajax over the last few seasons. However, he has failed to carry over that form into the current season and has made just 16 league appearances.
While Ziyech suffered from injuries at the start of the season, he was still one of Frank Lampard’s regulars. After the arrival of Tuchel, his minutes have dwindled a bit.
The German manager has given more time to the likes of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz in a bid to get them in form. Van der Gijp thinks that the Moroccan might have to leave the club this summer.
“It was a good choice when Lampard was coach. He was very enthusiastic about him. Then another trainer arrives, and he wants to play a different game. He wants to have runners in midfield instead of people like Ziyech. Then you have a problem… So it’s best for him to leave.”
While it is understandable that Ziyech is struggling a bit under Tuchel and a sale could be a viable option, giving up on him after just one season sounds premature. The Moroccan is a quality player capable of unlocking defences and should be allowed more time to show his worth.
