Chelsea star’s message for teammates ahead of key Porto and Man City ties; delivers verdict on new position

Kai Havertz sends message to Chelsea teammates ahead of season-defining Porto and Manchester City clashes

Speaking to the official Chelsea website after his team’s win against Crystal Palace, Kai Havertz urged his Chelsea teammates to maintain focus ahead of their upcoming clashes against FC Porto and Manchester City.

The Blues ran out 4-1 winners as Havertz scored a sumptuous goal to get the scoring underway for them. The German started as a centre-forward and starred in a game which saw Chelsea score more than twice for the first time under Thomas Tuchel.

Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner were both left out of the starting line-up as Havertz started up front. And the attacking midfielder revealed that it is a position he likes playing in.

“I like it, I think it is a good position for me. I have the freedom to go everywhere I want to go. As a striker it is always easy to play with players of those qualities.”

The Blues now have two titanic clashes awaiting them that have the potential to define their entire season. First up, they face Porto in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie on Tuesday night.

The Blues took a 2-0 away lead in the first leg and would consider themselves as favourites to go through. They last reached the final in 2012 under Roberto Di Matteo, and a similar feat here would be a memorable event in the club’s history.

A chance at glory

The weekend after their European showdown, Chelsea take on Manchester City in the semi-final of the FA Cup on Saturday. The Blues have won the competition 8 times, with their last win coming in 2018. (h/t Chelsea website)

Frank Lampard led them to a FA Cup final last year but they faltered to Arsenal. And Havertz now wants his teammates to stay focused and determined as they look to bring some much-needed silverware at the club.

“Every time our plan is to win every game. We have some tough matches and now we have Champions League and FA Cup and they are also important matches for us. Tuesday is our next game and we have to be focused.”

The turnaround at Chelsea under Tuchel has been clearly visible. The club is now in a strong position to finish in the top 4 and are competing for trophies on two fronts.

The FA Cup especially seems like a golden opportunity as beating the Citizens would see Chelsea face one of Leicester City or Southampton in the final at Wembley.
