Rival manager asks Chelsea fans to ‘calm down’ after protests against Super League

Jurgen Klopp asks Chelsea fans to tone it down after European Super League protest

Speaking to BT Sport (h/t Metro) on Saturday, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp asked for ‘calm’ from Chelsea and Arsenal fans after European Super League protests.

Last Sunday, 6 Premier League clubs announced their intentions of forming a breakaway league with other, major European clubs.

The European Super League, as it was to be called, would take away merit as the criterion for qualification by granting permanent spots in the competition to the founding members; all 6 English clubs, including Chelsea, were to be the founding members.

That was short-lived as backlash from fans, players and pundits made the concerned clubs back out on their decision, including Chelsea. The aftermath of the ESL saw a large section of Arsenal and Chelsea fans gather to protest and ask for change of ownership at the club.

‘Calm down!’

The supporters were out in numbers and very vocal. But Klopp has asked fans of both London clubs to ‘calm down’ as we are still living in a pandemic and because he thinks it’s time to move on from the saga.

“I see the pictures the last few days of the Arsenal and Chelsea stuff like this… I really think you all have to calm down… we are still in a pandemic. People are out there without face masks and shouting their opinion out.”

The Liverpool boss added that the owners have learnt their lesson and that is time to relax a bit and look ahead.

“We know it, it’s all clear now, people who made the decisions they learnt a lesson, I’m 100% sure. ‘Let’s just relax a little bit. We have to carry on, that’s always how it is.”

His point about the pandemic still going on is, of course, spot on as the world still struggles to truly overcome Covid-19. But it was due to those protests that clubs really heard the fans and got to know that they will not have public backing if they joined the ESL.
