“The kid is good” – Jurgen Klinsmann leaps to the defence of this struggling Chelsea star

Jurgen Klinsmann advises Thomas Tuchel on Timo Werner

According to Mirror, Jurgen Klinsmann had some advice for Thomas Tuchel regarding struggling Chelsea striker Timo Werner. The former Germany national team manager wants Tuchel to keep giving Werner more opportunities to prove himself.

It seems like Timo Werner really can’t catch a break. Despite only joining the club this season, he has failed to match his previously high standards. It has been an all too familiar sight of Werner missing chance after chance.

Real Madrid s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois R in action against Chelsea s Timo Werner 2-L during the UEFA Champions League first leg semifinal soccer match between Real Madrid CF and Chelsea FC at Alfredo Di Stefano stadium in Madrid, Spain, 27 April 2021.

The German striker missed another glorious opportunity to get an important away goal against Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final. Pulisic headed the ball towards Werner, who only had the keeper to beat from two yards out. It was even on his stronger right foot but he hit it too close to Courtois and the keeper pulled off a good save.

Prior to this, Werner squandered an easy chance in the West Ham game. However, former Germany manager Klinsmann came to his defence and advised Tuchel to keep giving him chances.

“I have total trust in him because he knows where to be in the right time and right now, here and there, he misses one in that specific moment. That’s something to deal with for a striker and you have to kind of just think about the next opportunity that comes along. You know, Michael Jordan said he missed more shots than he scored. And for Timo Werner it’s just like if you fail in moments it makes you only stronger.

“The kid is good. The kid has a tremendous amount of drive and talent and he knows where the ball will fall in the box and he can also make things happen himself with his speed and going at people, so I totally have trust in Timo Werner. He will go through that stage and who knows, maybe he will score in the next game in the second leg or in the final of the Champions League.”

While it is understandable that Klinsmann is looking at the positives, a tally of three goals in 2021 so far really does not help. He is missing absolute sitters and that may cost Chelsea in the future. One can only hope Tuchel can afford to give him more chances as Chelsea are in the business end of the season.
