According to Metro, Joachim Low has slammed Chelsea striker Timo Werner for missing an open goal. The Germans eventually succumbed to a 1-2 defeat to North Macedonia, leaving them in third place in Group J of the 2022 WC Qualifiers.
It seems like Timo Werner really can’t catch a break. Despite only joining the club this season, he has failed to match his previously high standards.
However, two goals since November tells you the story. He is not playing badly but the fact that he is not taking his chances should worry the club. A similar thing happened against Macedonia, as the match was evenly poised at 1-1 in the 79th min.
Ilkay Gundogan broke free with the ball and Werner was also running into the box unmarked. The City man squared it into Werner and it looked harder to miss than to score. He had the goal at his mercy and somehow, he managed to fluff his left-footed shot sideways.
Joachim Low could not help but speak about the incident.
‘He must put that ball away, no question at all. He has shown here he can score goals. But he doesn’t hit the ball right with his left foot, if he makes a clean contact with the ball it’s a goal.’
It was a costly miss in the aftermath, with North Macedonia coming away with an unlikely win. Had Werner scored that goal, it would have given Germany the room to dominate the game. Chelsea will be worried about this as much as Low, given the striker is struggling so much this season.
