“No longer”: European club chief admits future of Chelsea-linked star might not be in their hands

Borussia Dortmund might not have the final say in future of Chelsea transfer target Erling Haaland

Speaking in an interview (h/t Express), Sebastian Kehl admitted that Erling Haaland transfer talks could get to a point where Borussia Dortmund might not be able to stop him from leaving, as Chelsea links continue to rage on.

The Norwegian superstar has been linked with a move away from Dortmund for a while now. And there are no shortage of suitors, with clubs across Europe interested in a transfer.

His father, Alf-Inge Haaland, and agent, Mino Raiola, were on the road earlier this week as they held meetings with Barcelona and Real Madrid over a potential move.

Apart from them, English clubs are also interested in the striker. Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City are keen to sign the 20-year-old who can cost more than £130m in the summer.

Not in their hands

He does have a release clause for around £64million. But that becomes active in the summer of 2022 and despite the big difference in the fee, Dortmund might want to keep him till then.

Especially with Marco Rose coming in to take over the managerial helm at the end of this season, Haaland’s stay could be desired at Westfalenstadion. But Kehl admits it can get to a point where it’s out of Dortmund’s hands.

“Of course, we have been following the situation. But we had a very, very good talk with Mino and his father just recently. I don’t want to go into those talks now. From a certain point on, we may no longer be able to influence what the future will bring.”

He could be referring to the club’s disadvantage in the race for top 4 this season. The Black and Yellow were handed a 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt that leaves them 7 points off 4th spot.
