Olivier Giroud most likely to be axed as Chelsea ramp up striker chase

Transfer News: Olivier Giroud likely to exit Chelsea

According to transfer news from Goal, Olivier Giroud is evaluating his options and will likely exit Chelsea. His current deal ends this season but he is reluctant to extend his stay after falling down the pecking order.

The 34-year-old Giroud has been with Chelsea since January 2018 when he sealed a transfer from Arsenal. The veteran forward has been a handy player for the Blues, chipping in with vital goals on a consistent basis. So far this term, Giroud has racked up a tally of 11 goals from 26 matches in all competitions, scoring some important goals, especially in the UEFA Champions League.

However, the Frenchman’s future at the club is far from certain as he is in the final few months of his contract. Indeed, Giroud’s current deal with Chelsea runs out at the end of the season, which has led to interest from a host of clubs in Italy.

The fact is that Giroud is not a starter and not even the second choice at Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel has either used Kai Havertz in a false nine role or stuck with Timo Werner to help him through his rough patch. Lest we forget, Chelsea also have Tammy Abraham on their side. With the EURO 2020 and World Cup taking place this year and next, respectively, Giroud would want to lead the line for France and that depends on him playing at his club.

Giroud has been a very useful squad player. Even at 34, the Frenchman adds a lot of value to the side but has become a bit-part player in recent weeks. There is talk of Chelsa going after either Haaland or Lukaku, meaning that Giroud would be better off at another club.
