Blow for Chelsea as Gianluigi Donnarumma is set for AC Milan stay after contract U-turn

Transfer News: Gianluigi Donnarumma to stay at AC Milan despite Chelsea links

According to transfer news from TalkSPORT (h/t Irish Sun), Gianluigi Donnarumma is set to stay at AC Milan despite links to Chelsea. The Italian shot-stopper is likely to renew his deal with the club and could snub a move to either Chelsea or Manchester United.

Donnarumma has been on the news with his contract set to end this season and no extension being agreed. That attracted the attention of clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea, who wanted to sign the keeper on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Contract talks had been dragging on to the point that it was almost the case that he would be leaving Milan. Chelsea were waiting to snap him up in that scenario. Earlier, it had been reported that Donnarumma would be leaving the club as a new deal could not be agreed with the club.

However, in a turn of events, Chris Parrott of TalkSPORT (h/t Irish Sun) reveals that the player is willing to stay put and sign on the dotted line. Apparently, Donnarumma is excited about the ongoing project at Milan and the visible progress being made under Stefano Pioli.

“For me, for all of the years he has been at Milan this is the one year where you would not want to leave. They are threatening to create something and will be back in the Champions League next season. This isn’t the time to join Juventus. They need a major rebuild and it just seems again that Raiola isn’t getting his players to the right clubs but the clubs where they get the most money.”

That does put a dent in Chelsea’s plans to sign one of the best young keepers in the game. Nonetheless, this was a position they don’t need to fix. Edouard Mendy has been a solid presence in goal with Kepa proving to be an able deputy.
