Thomas Tuchel reveals the secret behind Chelsea’s strong “defensive numbers” this season

Thomas Tuchel explains the reasons behind Chelsea having great defensive statistics this season

Speaking after his team’s FA Cup triumph on Saturday (h/t football.london), Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel unveiled the reasons behind his side sporting such good defensive numbers this season.

The Blues have had a resurrection under their new German boss. They have lost just twice in the 19 games he has managed, with one of those losses still resulting in an aggregate win over FC Porto.

Chelsea are strongly positioned to finish top 4, in the UEFA Champions League semi-final, and in the FA Cup final. Tuchel’s men saw off Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final yesterday in a 1-0 win.

This was the club’s 14th clean sheet in 19 games under the former PSG boss. It is clear that Chelsea’s successful second half of the season is largely down to their defensive record. (h/t WhoScored)

And the gaffer revealed just how his team have managed to maintain this record. He mentions how his team’s aggressive defensive style is also a team effort.

“We are very strong in defensive numbers and statistics. That belongs to the courage of the players, the individual behaviours, and as a team. We defend very, very actively and aggressively with huge solidarity. This is the key. On this level, it is like this. Everyone needs to attack and defend.”

The three-man backline is working wonders for Tuchel. And it seems as if Chelsea have a real chance of lifting at least one trophy this season.

The Blues face either Leicester City or Southampton in the final of the FA Cup next month, and have a two-legged semi-final date in the Champions League against Real Madrid before.
